Biography

Ellis Clugston (SN 851) born at Warracknabeal, was an 18 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 29th 1915. On May 8th he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Euripides and sailed to Egypt where he joined the 24th Infantry Battalion. In October he was admitted to hospital in Cairo suffering from diphtheria and for a time he was listed as dangerously ill. Due to ‘muscular wasting’ he was returned to Australia aboard the Ulysses. He reached Melbourne on February 5th 1916 and was discharged medically unfit on July 12th.

His brother Henry also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
