Biography

Jason Leslie Boyd Coulter (SN 1333) was born in Ballarat and educated at Grenville College. He was a 36 year old mining engineer when he enlisted at Randwick, NSW, on August 27th 1914. Stating his age as 35, he enlisted under the name "Boyd" and left Sydney on board the Suffolk with the 2nd Infantry Battalion in October. His name was corrected before he transferred to the 8th Battalion in March and he was promoted to Corporal soon after the landing at Gallipoli on April 25th. Of the landing, he wrote 'God how the shells poured over us while the bullets from the enemies’ rifles poured into us - what a day of sorrow'. He was wounded a month later and did not return to duty until the end of July. Promoted to Sergeant in August, he was severely wounded a couple of days later and evacuated to Alexandria where he died of his wounds on August 10th 1915. He is buried in the Chatby War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt.

Two of his brothers also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue. Graham served in Gallipoli and France, and Leslie was killed in action in France in 1917. A third brother, Sydney, was killed in action during the Boer War.
