Biography

William Henry Maywood (SN 1426) born at Gordon, was a 20 year old butcher when he enlisted in Ballarat on November 18th 1914. He embarked aboard the Berrima on December 22nd and sailed to Egypt. With the 15th Infantry Battalion, he landed at Gallipoli on April 25th 1915. On May 7th he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his lower jaw and was evacuated to hospital in Egypt where he was assessed as unfit for further active service. He was returned to Australia aboard the Ballarat, disembarked at Melbourne on August 6th 1915 and was discharged on February 16th 1916.

His brother Ernest also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
