Biography

Ernest Maywood MM (SN 1427) born at Gordon, was a 24 year old builder’s labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on November 18th1914. He embarked aboard the Berrima on December 22nd and served for a time at Gallipoli with the 15th Infantry Battalion until illness forced his evacuation. He later served in France, from June 1916, with the 46th and 47th Battalions and his gallantry in the field was recognised with a Military Medal in November 1917. He avoided battle wounds but in June 1918 he did suffer an accidentally fractured nose. He was granted ‘1914 leave’ and returned to Australia aboard the Port Hacking, disembarked at Melbourne on January 27th 1919 and was discharged on March 28th.

His brother William also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
