Albert James Paulig (SN 64) grew up in Ballarat and attended the Humffray Street State School. He was 20 years old, single and employed as a coach builder when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 18th 1914. He joined the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in October on board the Benalla, bound for Gallipoli. He was promoted to Sergeant a couple of days after the Landing at Gallipoli but was killed at Krithia on May 8th 1915. He has no known grave, and his name is recorded on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.
His brother Henri was also killed at Gallipoli, a week after Albert, and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
