Charles Herbert Harrop (SN 1098) was born in Gordon and enlisted from Mt Egerton on March 8th 1915, where he was working as a farm hand. He was 20 years old and single. He joined the 23rd Infantry Battalion, left Australia in May aboard the Euripides and was twice wounded at Gallipoli. He reached France in March 1916 and on July 28th 1916 he was killed in action at Pozieres. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers- Bretonneux, France.
His brother Rupert also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue. Rupert was killed in Belgium in 1917.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as C. Herbert Harrop.
