Biography

William John Sells (SN 2249) was born in Ballarat East and attended the Humffray Street and Queen Street State Schools, but enlisted at Avoca on March 4th 1915 . The unmarried, 23 year old, commercial traveller was posted to the 6th Battalion and, within a month, he was promoted to Lance Corporal. Alongside his brother Samuel, he embarked from Melbourne in June aboard the Wandilla. He joined his unit from reinforcements at Gallipoli on August 6th 1915 but was killed the next day in the fighting around Hill 971. He has no known grave but his name is recorded on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.

His brother Samuel was also killed at Gallipoli and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
