Henry Charles De Graaff (SN 726) born in Ballarat, was a 23 year old labourer when he enlisted in Adelaide on August 28th 1914. With the 10th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Adelaide on October 20th aboard the Ascanius. On April 25th 1915 he took part in the historic Gallipoli landing but suffered a serious gunshot wound to his back a few days later. He was evacuated to hospital in Malta before being returned to Australia on the Ascanius. He disembarked at Adelaide on October 4th 1915 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, wounded’ on November 18th.
His half brothers Stanley, William and Albert also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
