Frank John Peart was born in Maryborough, VIC and was a Bank teller in Ballarat when he enlisted in the Field Artillery Brigade 4, Head-Quarters on 13 May 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 18 November 1915. On 15 August 1916, while serving in France, he was wounded in action with a gunshot wound which fractured his right leg and was evacuated to the 1st Australian General Hospital. He was attached with the Army Pay Corps Squadron on 16 March 1917 and was promoted to 2nd Corporal on 1 September 1917. Prior to his discharge he received the rank of Sergeant.
