William Garner Gordon (SN 2516) born at Ballarat, was a 32 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on June 8th 1915. On July 16th he embarked aboard the Demosthenes as a reinforcement for the 6th Infantry Battalion. He came ashore at Gallipoli in early October but only lasted there for a few days before illness forced his evacuation. His service from this point was highlighted by an extended hospital stay due to disease and by a couple of periods of being absent without leave that involved detention and forfeiture of pay. He was returned to Australia aboard the Suevic, disembarked on November 18th 1917 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on April 29th 1918.
His brothers Albert, Samuel and Clarence also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
