James Leslie Whitworth Wormald (SN 4339) born at Ballarat was an 18 year old clerk when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 12th 1915 . Assigned to the 7th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Demosthenes on December 29th and sailed to Egypt before being moved to France in April 1916. His service was frequently interrupted by health issues, and he was returned to Australia aboard the Demosthenes. He disembarked at Melbourne on September 24th 1917 and was discharged on November 29th ‘medically unfit, tuberculosis’.
His brother George also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Leslie J. Wormald.
