Biography

Andrew Victor Sharp was born in Ballarat and was a Clerk by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 18th Reinforcement on 7 July 1915 at the age of 28. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A33 Ayrshire on 3 July 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth on September 2nd. The following month he crossed to France. In February 1917 he developed a septic toe on his left foot which required his evacuation to the 1st Southern General Hospital in England. While convalescing in England he was twice charged with being absent without leave and once for æneglecting to obey a superior officer'. He also developed bronchitis and it was decided he should return to Australia and he disembarked from the Borda at Melbourne on November 21st 1917. He was discharged soon after as æmedically unfit – asthma and bronchitis'.
