Frederick William Harris (SN 4214) was born in Ballarat and attended the Brown Hill State School. With the consent of his father, he enlisted on July 16th 1915 as an 19 year old farm labourer. As a member of the 14th Battalion, he left Melbourne a few days after Christmas 2015, on board the Demosthenes. During the early stages of his service he fell foul of his superiors on a number of occasions for being 'absent from Reveille' and other minor misdemeanours. After being wounded in action in August 1916, he was ultimately killed in action during the First Battle of Bullecourt on April 11th 1917. He has no known grave, but his sacrifice is recognised on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
His brother Charles was awarded the Military Medal before being killed in action at Pozieres in August 1917 and is also honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
