Frederick William Harris (SN 4214) was born in Ballarat from where, with the consent of his father, he enlisted on July 16th 1915 as an 18 year old farm labourer. With his unit, he left Melbourne a few days after Christmas 2015, on board the Demosthenes. Posted to France with the 14th Infantry Battalion, he fell foul of his superiors on a number of occasions for being 'absent from Reveille' and other minor misdemeanours. After being wounded in action in August 1916, he was ultimately killed in action during the First Battle of Bullecourt on April 11th 1917. He has no known grave but his sacrifice is recognised on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial in France.
His brother Charles, who won the Military Medal and was killed in action at Pozieres, is also recognised in the Avenue at tree 3319.
