Lila Constance Whidburn (Staff Nurse) was born in Ballarat and trained as a nurse at the Ballarat Base Hospital. Aged 25, she joined the Australian Army Nursing Service on November 7th 1917. On November 26th she embarked aboard the Indarra and sailed to Bombay, India, where she served at the Colaba War Hospital nursing sick and wounded British soldiers. When the war ended, she returned to Australia aboard the City of Cairo, disembarked on March 23rd 1919 and her appointment was terminated on May 17th.
Her brother John also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Leila Whidburn.
