Biography

George Herbert Williams MSM (SN 3945) enlisted in Ballarat on July 8th 1915. He was a 28 year old clerk from Eyre Street. He trained with the 14th Depot Battalion before being attached to the 12 Reinforcements 14th Battalion. On November 23rd he embarked from Melbourne on the Ceramic and sailed via Suez, reaching France in June 1916 attached to the 46th Battalion. He was slightly wounded on November 23rd but was able to rejoin his unit three days later. Soon after this he was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant and his conscientious service in France was rewarded in June 1919 with the award of the Meritorious Service Medal. ‘For continuous good work and devotion to duty as R.Q.M.S. to the Battalion. His work has been of great assistance to the Battalion throughout a long period. During the operations east of Hamel his work of organising and getting supplies forward greatly assisted the Battalion in maintaining its fighting efficiency. At all times he is tireless in his efforts for the welfare and feeding of the troops. His handling of supplies and equipment is largely responsible for the economic running of the Battalion’. George returned to Australia on the Armagh and disembarked at Melbourne on May 18th 1919.
He died in June 1963 at the age of 78.
