William Ernest Williams (SN 4906) born at Ballarat, was a 21 year old warehouseman when he enlisted in Melbourne on March 26th 1917. Assigned to the 29th Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Suevic on June 21st and sailed to England. In January 1918 he was transferred to the 14th Battalion and moved to France. Just three weeks later he was wounded in action, gassed, and evacuated to hospital. Once recovered, a month later, he was transferred to the Motor Transport Company with which he served out the remainder of the war. He returned home aboard the Chemnitz, disembarked at Melbourne on September 5th 1919 and was discharged on January 25th 1920.

His brothers Edward and George also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
