Biography

David Drummond (SN 4172) born at Sebastopol, was a 21 year old bank clerk when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 26th 1915. He embarked on December 29th aboard the Demosthenes for service on the Western Front with the 14th Infantry Battalion. During his service he was wounded on four separate occasions, suffering gunshot and shrapnel wounds, mustard gas poisoning and shell shock when buried by a bomb explosion. In addition to this he was awarded the Military Medal, ‘During the recent operations beyond MESSINES on the night of the 11th/12th June 1917 this Non Commissioned Officer displayed the most conspicuous bravery whilst in charge of patrols reconnoitring the sniper-infested country beyond the GREEN LINE. By his audacity and skill he obtained most valuable information. Later he was in charge of an isolated Advance Post in DELPORTE FARM which for 24 hours had no support on its Flanks but the coolness, ability and great devotion to duty displayed by this Non Commissioned Officer was a fine example to his men and resulted in the complete consolidation of the Post under most trying and hazardous conditions.' He made it back to Australia aboard the Orsova, disembarked at Melbourne on February 27th 1919 and was discharged on April 13th.

His brothers Henry and John also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
