Biography

Roy Leslie Lyons (SN 13315) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old clerk when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 14th 1915. Assigned to the 12th Field Ambulance he embarked from Melbourne on March 7th 1916 aboard the Karoola and reached France in June. In his early months on the battlefields he was troubled by tonsilitis and blistered feet. In 1917 he was twice charged with offences relating to leave passes but he avoided battle wounds. He was returned home aboard the Anchises, disembarked at Melbourne on January 3rd 1918 and was discharged on February 4th 1918 ‘medically unfit, hammer toes’.

His brothers James and Herbert also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
