Born in Ballarat, James Edward Lyons was a single 26 year old clerk at the time of his enlistment on the 1st of July 1917. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on the 9th of November 1915.
On the 21st of July 1916, James was wounded in action and invalided to England with a gunshot wound to his right leg.
He rejoined his unit on the 27th of January 1917.
James returned to Australia on the 7th of June 1918 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 15th of August 1918, due to problems with his heart.
