Biography

Edwin Bennett Kewley was born in Ballarat and was a leather worker by trade when he enlisted in the No 1 Australian General Hospital on March 29th 1915 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board A62 Wandilla on June 25th 1915 and served for a time with the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Gallipoli. Illness cut short his time at Anzac but in April 1916 he rejoined his unit in France where he served as a medic at the 1st Australian General Hospital at Rouen. He returned to Australia in March 1919.

His father Albert and brother Frederick also served in the AIF and are both recognised with trees in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Edward B. Kewley.
