Arthur Harold Mars (SN 4254) born at Castlemaine, was an 18 year old blacksmith when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 28th 1915. Posted to the 14th Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Demosthenes on December 29th. He began his combat service in France in July 1916. In August he was wounded, shell shock, but was able to rejoin his unit in October. His health then began to deteriorate due to the contraction of scabies and influenza, and it was decided he was unfit to continue active service. He was returned to Australia aboard the Suevic, disembarked at Melbourne on November 18th 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on December 28th.

His brother Stanley was killed in action on April 27th 1915 and his brother Conrad also served in the AIF and they are honoured with trees in the Avenue. Also his step-brothers Frederick, Valentine, and John Stradling also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
