Allan Francis Hayward Gabriel MM (SN 1927) was born in Bolwarrah, near Ballarat, and attended the Ballarat Agricultural High School. Upon enlisting at Melbourne on June 15th 1915, as the 3rd Reinforcements with the 23rd Battalion, he was single and was employed as a teacher. He departed Melbourne on board the Anchises on August 26th 1915. Allan was promoted to Corporal, then Sergeant during 1916. On October 31st 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal, his citation reading in part 'for conspicuous bravery in action at Broodseinde, Belgium on 9th October 1917'. Subsequently he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in July 1918. He was shot twice at the battle for Mont St Quentin on September 1st 1918 and invalided to London. He returned to Melbourne on the March 23rd 1919, was discharged on May 15th 1919, and returned to teaching. Allan subsequently enlisted as an instructor during the Second World War, based at Fort Queenscliff, Victoria. He died in 1962 and is buried in the Castlemaine Cemetery.
Two of his brothers also served. Vivian who served in the AIF and Arthur who served in the Navy, both are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
