Biography

Vivian John Gabriel (SN 2897) enlisted at Victoria Barracks in Sydney, New South Wales at the age of 34 on September 28th 1916. Born in Bolwarrah, Victoria, he was single, and employed as a linesman when he enlisted with the 60th Battalion, 7th Rfts. He embarked from Sydney aboard the Afric on November 3rd 1916. He was invalided to England during December 1917 with trench fever. After attending the Fifth Division Signalers School in London in 1918 he was transferred to the 8th Battalion in October 1918. He returned to Sydney, Australia on September 19th 1919 with an English wife and child. He died in 1975 and his ashes interred in the Rose Garden, Woronora Memorial Park, N.S.W.

Two of his brothers Allan and Arthur also served and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Thomas W Gabriel.
