Leslie Eric Suares (SN 1946) born in Geelong, was a 22 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 18th 1915. On January 20th 1916 he embarked from Sydney aboard the Runic. Once in Egypt he was transferred from the 4th Light Horse Regiment to the 2nd Anzac Mounted Regiment before moving to France in June. While in France he was transferred to the 8th Field Artillery Brigade. Aside from an accidental ankle injury in March 1918, he managed to avoid serious combat wounds or illness. He returned home aboard the Derbyshire, embarked on April 22nd 1919 and was discharged on June 6th. He served again (SN V383134) in World War 2.

His brothers Claud, Hugh and William also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
