Hugh Wallace Suares (SN 4588) born at Geelong, was an 18 year old railway employee when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 20th 1915. As a reinforcement for the 8th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Themistocles on February 28th 1916. On arrival in Egypt he was transferred to the 58th Battalion with whom he moved to France in June 1916. On July 16th he sustained a gunshot wound to his lower leg and was evacuated to hospital in England. The injury was such that he was assessed as unfit for further active service. He returned to Australia aboard the Ulysses, disembarked on April 2nd 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on May 30th.

His brothers Leslie, Claud and William also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
