Biography

Hugh Wallace Suares was born in Geelong, Victoria, was single and a railway Employee when he enlisted with the 8th Battalion, 14th Reinforcement on 20 July 1915 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 January 1916. On 22 July 1916 he was wounded in action, suffering a gunshot wound to the left leg and foot. He was evacuated immediately and invalided overseas to the UK, to the 2nd Australian Hospital in Southall. On 13 February 1917 he returned to Australia aboard the Hospital Transport Ulysses. He received a full medical discharge on 30 May 1917.
