Biography

Alfred Wilson (SN 4620) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old carpenter when he enlisted in Ballarat on November 23rd 1915. He embarked aboard the Themistocles on January 28th 1916, first to Egypt and then to France in June 1916 to serve with the 58th Infantry Battalion. In August he suffered a gunshot wound to the foot and a subsequent enquiry determined that it had been negligently self-inflicted. He was evacuated to hospital in England and when he returned to France in October 1917 he had been transferred to the 65th Battalion. He had some further discipline issues but returned to Australia aboard the Port Melbourne, disembarked at Melbourne on August 20th 1919 and was discharged on October 26th.

His brothers Willie and Henry also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
