Biography

Norman "Willie" Wilson (SN 351), son of Ripon Street Grocer, Henry and Cath Wilson (née McInerney) was born in Ballarat and educated at the Pleasant Street State School. Willie was 22 years old, single, and a labourer when he enlisted on 24 August 1914 in Sydney, New South Wales with the 1st Battalion of the 1st Brigade. He embarked aboard the Afric on 18 October 1914 and took part in the landing at Gallipoli and was wounded there sometime between the 25-29 April, 1915. Returning to the Front a second time, his wound broke out afresh. Recovering again he joined his comrades once more. However, on 3 August 1915 he was seriously wounded when a Turkish home-made bomb exploded. On 8 August 1915, he died of these wounds. An extraordinary delay took place before his parents were notified of his death as he was first reported missing, and then reported wounded.
He was buried at Brown's Dip but was later reinterred at Lone Pine Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

His brothers Alfred and Henry also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Norman W. Wilson.
