Biography

Thomas Trail Gunn was born in Creswick and was a Glazier by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 8 February 1916 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A23 Suffolk on 1 April 1916. In September 1916 he joined the 8th Battalion at the battle front in Belgium. In May 1918 he was admitted to hospital in France suffering from tonsillitis then subsequently evacuated to the Central Military Hospital at Eastbourne in England suffering from diphtheria. He was able to rejoin his unit in France in mid-October 1918, just a month before the signing of the Armistice. He returned to Australia on the Soudan, disembarking on August 13th 1919.
