Biography

William Alexander McGregor (SN 5175) was born in Ballarat and was living in Ballarat East when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 8th 1916. The 26 year old, married labourer joined the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in April on board the Suffolk. By June he was serving in France but was evacuated to England in August after being wounded in action. He rejoined his unit in February 1917 but was wounded again only three months later. Returning to the front, he was killed in the fighting along Menin Road on September 20th 1917. He has no known grave and his name is on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

His brothers James, Rob Roy, and Stanley also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
