Biography

John Brew (SN 2284) was born in England and working as a journalist with the Ballarat Courier when he enlisted on September 26th 1916 at the age of 42. He was posted to the 39th Infantry Battalion and embarked on the Port Lincoln on October 20th. He was killed in action at Messines, Belgium, on June 8th 1917. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.

His brother Samuel and cousin Thomas were also killed in action and are both honoured with trees in the Avenue.
