Biography

Samuel Brew (SN 9806) was born in England and came to Australia as a 23 year old. His mother lived in Ballarat but he was a 39 year old labourer in Adelaide when he enlisted on September 11th 1915. He embarked aboard the Shropshire on March 25th 1916, reaching France in July to serve with the 6th Field Ambulance. In May 1917 he was wounded in action and spent three weeks in hospital in France recovering from a foot wound. In August 1918 he was again wounded in action, this time sustaining severe gunshot wounds to his leg and arm. He died at a field hospital three days later on August 16th 1918. He was 42 years of age and is buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery Extension in France.

His brother John and cousin Thomas were also killed in action and are both honoured with trees in the Avenue.
