Leslie Everton Hurley (SN 248) was born at Beechworth but gave his address as Victoria Avenue in Ballarat when he enlisted on September 11th 1914. He was 21 years of age and, following in the family tradition on two counts, was nearing the end of his medical studies when he answered his country’s call. On October 19th he sailed from Melbourne aboard the Wiltshire as part of the first ANZAC fleet. He served on Gallipoli with the 2nd Field Ambulance until July 1915 when his commander received notification that Leslie had received approval to return to Australia to complete his medical studies. He left Gallipoli in August and returned to Australia on the Euripides. He died in May 1967.
His three brothers, Victor, Cromwell and Leopold also served in the AIF and are remembered with trees in the Avenue.
