Biography

John Cromwell Hurley (SN 5931) was born in Everton in north eastern Victoria but enlisted in Melbourne in May 1916. He was a 26 year old clerk and married to Alice when he embarked aboard the Nestor on October 2nd to serve with the 22nd Battalion. Sadly, Alice and little daughter Elva would never see him again. In May 1917 during the Second Battle of Bullecourt he was reported 'missing in action’ and it was not until a Court of Inquiry six months later that it was confirmed he had been ‘killed in action’ on May 3rd 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux in France.

His three brothers, Victor, Leslie and Leopold also served in the AIF and are remembered with trees in the Avenue.
