Biography

Horace Leopold Hurley (SN 35063) was a 25 year old military clerk and married to Marie at the time of his enlistment on September 18th 1917. Entering the service at the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1, he embarked from Melbourne on the Port Sydney on November 9th. He reached England in early January 1918 and was attached to the Australian Army Ordnance Corps. In July he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant then promoted to full Lieutenant in October. When the war ended he was transferred to AIF Headquarters to assist with the massive logistical task of getting thousands of men back to Australia. He finally left England on March 27th 1920 and returned to Australia aboard the Zealandic. He was discharged on June 20th 1920.

His three brothers, Victor, Leslie and Cromwell also served in the AIF and are remembered with trees in the Avenue.
