Biography

William Ross Sara (Lt.) was born and educated at Learmonth. He was a 25 year old unmarried bank accountant when he enlisted on April 16th 1916, having previously served with the 9th Australian Light Horse and the Victorian Scottish Regiments. He embarked in July on board the Ayrshire to serve with the 6th Infantry Battalion. He arrived in France in December 1916 but was hospitalised the following month. On January 10th 1917 he died of cerebro-spinal meningitis and is buried in Allonville Communal Cemetery, France.

Two brothers also served in the AIF with Gordon safely returning home, while Russell was killed in action in Belgium in 1917. All three brothers are honoured with adjacent trees in the Avenue.
