Biography

Russell Eric Sara (Lt.) was born and educated at Learmonth. A serving member of the 9th Light Horse Regiment, he was a 23 year old, unmarried saddler when he enlisted on May 17th 1916 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He embarked from Melbourne in November on board the Hororata to join the 7th Infantry Battalion. He arrived in France from England in April 1917 and was promoted to Lieutenant the following month. On September 21st 1917 he was killed during the fighting at Menin Road, and is buried at Perth Cemetery, Zillebeke, Belgium.

Two brothers also served in the AIF with Gordon safely returning home, while William died of meningitis in France in 1917. All three brothers are honoured with adjacent trees in the Avenue.
