Biography

Alan Gordon Sara (SN 3015), was born in Learmonth but enlisted in Melbourne on June 22nd 1916. The 21 year old, unmarried bank clerk, who had previously served with the 9th Australian Light Horse Regiment and the 31st Australian Field Artillery, left Melbourne with the 8th A.L.H. on board the Clan MacCorquodale in September. His service in Egypt appears to have been relatively uneventful, punctuated only by an admission to hospital with a 'sprained back'. He was briefly promoted to Lance Corporal in November 1917 but was returned to the ranks at his request the following day. He returned to Australia on board the Port Sydney in May and was discharged on July 17th 1918.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as A. Gordon Sara.

Two brothers also served in the AIF with William dying of meningitis in France in 1917, while Russell was killed in action in Belgium the same year. All three brothers are honoured with adjacent trees in the Avenue.
