Biography

John ‘Jack’ Leslie Westcott (SN 6368) born at Warrenheip, was a 25 year old farmer when he enlisted in Ballarat on June 17th 1915. On September 11th he embarked aboard the Euripides and in January 1917 he joined the 6th Infantry Battalion in France. On October 4th 1917 he sustained a gunshot wound to his right hip and was evacuated to hospital in England. He was destined not to return to the trenches because even though it seems his hip recovered it was an old injury that caused him to be returned to Australia on the Suevic. He disembarked at Melbourne on June 7th 1918 and was discharged on July 25th ‘medically unfit, old foot injury’.

His brothers Garnet and Frederick and his sister Annie also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
