Biography

Samuel Phillip Eddy was born in Ballarat and was a Tailor by trade when he enlisted in the 59th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 24 July 1916 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 2 October 1916. . In June 1917 he joined the 59th Battalion in France but in October he was withdrawn to hospital in England suffering from severe myalgia. He rejoined his battalion in April 1918 but in late October, with the end of the war imminent, he was evacuated to the Bath War Hospital, dangerously ill, suffering from broncho-pneumonia. He returned to Australia on the Plassy, reaching Melbourne on April 30th 1919.
