Samuel Philp Eddy (SN 2655) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old tailor when he enlisted in the 59th Battalion on July 24th 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne aboard the Nestor on October 2nd 1916. In June 1917 he proceeded to France but in October he was withdrawn to hospital in England suffering from severe myalgia. He rejoined his battalion in April 1918 but in late October, with the end of the war imminent, he was evacuated to the Bath War Hospital, dangerously ill, suffering from broncho-pneumonia. He returned to Australia on the Plassy, reaching Melbourne on April 30th 1919 and was discharged on July 28th. He also enlisted (SN V83368) to serve in World War 2.

His father Samuel and his brother William also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
