Richard Boyce (SN 4530) from Smeaton, had two periods of service. In February 1915, while working as a railway ganger in Western Australia, he enlisted but deserted in March. He enlisted again, in Melbourne, in January 1916 and sailed from Australia in June aboard the Warilda. He reached France in August and served out the war as a member of the 3rd Tunnelling Company.
His brothers Bertram (killed in action) and James also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
