James Ferguson Boyce was born in Ballarat and was an Engineer by trade when he enlisted in the Australian Flying Corps, 3rd Special Draft on 19 May 1917 at the age of 30. He returned to Australia 6 May 1919.

James had two brothers that also served: Bertram Allenby Boyce, 5th Bn, killed in action, Pozieres, France, 25 July 1916 (Tree No 741) and Richard Boyce, Tunnelling Company, returned to Australia (Tree No 2979)
