Biography

Macklam James Martin (Mack) Kerby DCM (SN 1364) was born in Ballarat and educated at Mt. Pleasant State School and Grenville College. He appears to have enlisted in Melbourne in January 1916, then again in Casula NSW on February 15th 1916. The 30 year old, married engineer was assigned to the 3rd Tunnelling Company in the Australian Mining Corps and left Sydney on board the Ulysses only a week later. Promoted to Sergeant, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for 'conspicuous bravery on operations.' He was killed on November 28th 1916 when a mine accidentally exploded at Loos, and is buried in the Hersin Communal Cemetery, France.

Mack was one of five brothers who served in the AIF, with two of them killed in action. Norman, Ed, Roy and Noble are all honoured with trees in the Avenue.
