Noble Kerby was born in Ballarat East and was a Clerk by trade when he enlisted in the 3rd General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 22 February 1918 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board RMS Orontes on 5 June 1918 and by the time he reached England in August, the war was entering its final months. Attached to the Australian General Base Depot he was posted to France in January 1919 to assist with the post-war scale down and withdrawal of men and resources. He returned to Australia later that year on the Devon, with his brother, Royal Richard Kerby (Tree No 3061)
