Arthur James Pinney (SN 2172) born in Melbourne, was a 24 year old shoeing smith when he enlisted in Melbourne on March 24th 1915. As a reinforcement for the 7th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Wandilla on June 17th. On August 5th he landed at Gallipoli but three weeks later, at Lone Pine, he suffered a bullet wound to his wrist and was evacuated first to Malta and then on to England. He was then returned to Australia aboard the Suevic, disembarked at Melbourne on April 22nd 1916 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, wounded’.
His cousins Edward and Frederick also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
