Biography

Edward Norman Pinney (SN 4288) was born in Ballarat and attended the Mt Pleasant State School. Unmarried, aged 23 and employed as a compositor, he enlisted on July 20th 1915. He was allotted to the 14th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in late December on board the Demosthenes. He arrived in France in June 1916 but was soon admitted to hospital with 'Cellulitis'. Discharged from hospital at the end of July, he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm barely a week later on 8th August 1916. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
