John Osmunde Webb (SN 16178) born in Ballarat, was a 22 year old waiter when he enlisted in Melbourne on September 2nd 1915. Assigned to the Medical Corps he trained and served in Melbourne until November 1916 when he embarked aboard the Hororata. He reached France in March 1917 to serve with the 5th Field Ambulance. In April 1918 he was wounded when he received shrapnel wounds to his thighs and was evacuated to hospital in England. While in England he also suffered from influenza and was unable to rejoin his unit until hostilities had ceased. He returned home as part of the nursing staff aboard the Beltana, disembarked at Melbourne on July 19th 1919 and was discharged on August 26th.
His brothers Cyril and Roy also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
