John Edward Thwaites was born in Carapooee, Victoria, was single and a Groom when he enlisted with the 7th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement on 30 March 1916 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 July 1916. He proceeded overseas to France from Southampton on 22 November 1916. His records then leap to 20 April 1918, noting he was wounded in action with a severe gunshot wound to the right leg, resulting in his immediate evacuation to the UK. He returned to Australia on 18 January 1919 and received a final medical discharge on 9 March 1919.
