Biography

William Percival Durant (SN 6314) born near Maryborough, was a 23 year old farmer when he enlisted in Melbourne on May 26th 1915. He embarked aboard the Nestor on October 11th to serve with the 6th Field Ambulance. He joined his unit at Anzac two weeks before the Gallipoli evacuation was completed. From March 1916 he served in France and avoided major harm although he was Mentioned in Despatches by General Sir William Haig. He returned to Australia aboard the Karoa, disembarked at Melbourne on May 8th 1919 and was discharged on September 23rd.

His half brother Thomas Thwaites was killed in action in November 1916 and also his half brother John Thwaites served in the AIF and they are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
