William George Wright (SN 15133) from Cobden Street Mt. Pleasant, was a 20 year old labourer when he enlisted in February 1916. He sailed from Sydney aboard the Aeneas on September 30th and disembarked in England on November 19th. Soon after his arrival he fell from a truck and sustained a head injury which would later impact on his service. He was attached to the Australian Dermatological Hospital at Bulford as a driver, but his service was punctuated by periods in hospital due to appendicitis, eyesight issues and fitting. A medical board determined that his fitting and blindness in one eye were attributable to his fall and head injury and that he should be invalided to Australia. He returned on the Llanstephan Castle, disembarking on April 16th 1918. Three months later he was discharged as ‘medically unfit – epilepsy’.
His brothers James and Norman also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
