John Northcott was a soldier by trade. At 24 years of age, he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 24th of August 1914. He was ranked as a Lieutenant on enlistment and his unit embarked from Hobart, Tasmania, on board HMAT A2 Geelong on the 20th of October 1914. He returned to Australia on the 25th of November 1915.
